International legal fora available to individuals and NGOs to protect environmental and human rights

International law is increasingly providing fora for private citizens and NGOs to challenge unsustainable development across the world. These fora include compliance committees of international environmental treaties like Aarhus. They include judicial proceedings under human right treaties like ECHR. They include accountability mechanisms like the World Bank Inspection Panel. And they include friend of the court submissions in WTO dispute resolution. Additionally, there is pressure on private lenders to implement grievance procedures in line with their commitments under the Equator Principles. Private citizens and NGOs are rarely aware of the opportunities they have within these fora to pursue environmental ends. The purpose of this knowledge cafe will be to share knowledge with the participants, thereby raising their awareness of what is available. It will give practical examples of how locally affected communities have used these fora. And it will provide a basic understanding of how these fora work, giving the participants the skills to identify opportunities going forward.

After the knowledge cafe, participants will better understand how to use these fora to achieve the goals set forth in the IUCN´s programmatic framework. Most importantly, participants will be able to identify opportunities in their own countries and related to their own areas of environmental concern. The knowledge cafe will give individuals the tools to better ensure that governments and IGOs take into account the issues that are important to the IUCN.
