Three national parks were seriously contaminated by the Hebei Spirit oil spill in Dec 7, 2007. A total amount of 12,547 kl of crude oil from the crude carrier was spread over the Yellow Sea of the Korea Peninsular. Tar balls were found in northern Jeju Island, which is located about 842 km from the incident site, after 33 days.
Following the incident, comprehensive surveys were launched and more than 20 fields of study were carried out to assess the impacts of oil spill on marine environment, and aquatic and terrestrial organisms. More than 60 researchers from universities and research institutes were involved in this scheme which will be lasted until 2019.
Through these studies, effects of the oil spill on local ecosystems and its subsequent biotic/ abiotic changes will be analyzed and compared in affected areas. Furthermore, necessary data will be secured to support reasonable managements for long-term monitoring and systematic restoration.
In this poster presentation, we will present the result of the monitoring for 4 years (2008~2011) performed to find ecological impact of Taeanhaean National Park after Hebei Spirit incident will be introduced.
