Community based chimpanzee conservation in Guinea Bissau

CHIMBO Foundation’s goal is chimpanzee conservation in West-Africa.
CHIMBO runs a community based conservation program in the south-eastern part of Guinea Bissau: the Boé sector. This is an area with a rich biodiversity with the chimpanzee as its flagship species.
Population growth (100% in 15 years) and the resulting need for more food threatens the rich flora and fauna.
The Boé forms the western fringe of the Fouta Diallon massif, an exceptionally important priority area for chimpanzee protection according to the Regional Action Plan for the Conservation of Chimpanzees in West Africa (SSC-IUCN). The Boé chimpanzees are unique in their use of the gallery forests as well as the surrounding savannah vegetation, a habit they share with only a few other populations in Africa.
In order to protect the (habitat of the) chimpanzee, CHIMBO is working intensively with the local people of the Boé to ensure sustainability of its work.
CHIMBO and its sister organisation Daridibó in Guinea Bissau have set up 27 village committees. These committees monitor chimpanzee populations, discourage and denounce hunting and evaluate damage caused by chimpanzees to crops. They are playing an important role in awareness raising for chimpanzee and nature conservation.
Other awareness raising activities include the organization of a soccer tournament (The “Dari-cup”), a cultural festival and competitions for primary school children. The local radio (“Radio Béli”) plays an important role in increasing knowledge on nature conservation and creating support for chimpanzee protection.
Our objective is to establish a community based protected area that is financially self-supporting. Ecotourism offers a good option and may thus contribute to the long-term conservation of the chimpanzee population, the alleviation of poverty and the well-being of the local inhabitants.
