Since the United Nations General Assembly declared 2005-2014 the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), ESD aims at providing every individual with the opportunity to acquire the values, competencies, knowledge and skills that enable him or her to contribute to a humane, socially just, economically viable and ecologically sustainable future. ESD is must-to-do to acquire sustainable future for people.
National parks, where biodiversity is embedded and people are living in harmony with nature, are the best places where ESD can be implemented. National Park Rangers can also play a very important role in education of visitors and local people. Despite its important role as the site of ESD implementation, education in national parks has been focusing on one-sided education, environmental education which is about the conservation of biodiversity. This is attributed from insufficient understanding of ESD concept and lack of skill by national parks rangers.
This training course will contribute to enhance capacity building for ESD mainly targeting park rangers. The session will be conducted in theoretical and practical way of training. It will introduce various kinds of good examples of ESD in national parks and other specially designated areas. Therefore, this will be a training trainer´s programme. The expected outcomes of this session is raising awareness about ESD role in national parks for sustainable future and increasing implementation of ESD in national parks.
