Fishers and fishery closures… join the discussion
Related to Motion 103. Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF)
All types of marine protected areas (MPAs), closed areas and fishery closures, have a direct impact of fishers. Closing an area for fishing benefits, conservation benefits, or both, directly affects local fishers, yet they are not always involved in their design and planning. Fisher’s knowledge of an area is often extensive. The importance of good governance, hence fisher involvement, for fisheries and conservation is not a new concept, however recent literature still show gaps in effective fisher involvement.
To share know how, this session aims to bring together participants to discuss this topic. This session also links to the following motions:
Accelerating the global pace of establishing marine protected areas and the certification of their effective management
Promoting Locally Managed Marine Areas as a socially inclusive approach to meeting area-based conservation and Marine Protected Area targets
I invite you to come and join in the discussion that will be centered on four thought questions. In knowledge cafe fashion, questions have been designed to be thought provoking, generate energy, and to focus inquiry. A knowledge map and a solutions wish list will be produced.
These questions, and the whole session outline are provided in the documents section.
