Economic Policies and Sustainability at a Time of Crisis (CEESP official session)

The Workshop will analyze the role of macroeconomic, financial and sector level policies in the transition towards sustainable development. The global economic and financial crisis underlines the need to understand how policy responses impact peoplesĀ“ livelihoods and environmental stewardship. The focus will be on 4 thematic issues:
Crisis, Recovery and Sustainability - Understanding the genesis and nature of the crisis is important for sustainability. If we fail to understand and interpret this crisis, we will most likely fail to design and implement policies that will lead to trajectories for social and environmental sustainability. (Nadal, Lal & Daemon)
Social, Economic and Environmental Implications of the Policy Response in the North and South - We will examine and discuss the legacy of austerity and the implications of a global recession for social and environmental sustainability as well as the implications for the financialization of nature. (Aseem Shrivastava)
Globalization and the Crisis of Neoliberalism - We will examine how the structure of the world economy works today and how the guiding principles of neoliberal globalization contributed to the crisis and its widespread effects and the changes required in the international monetary system in order to shift towards a trajectory of sustainability. (Kothari, Lal, Daemon) Change of Policy Paradigm: Moving away from the neoliberal mindset - This section focuses on policy alternatives at the macroeconomic level and at the sector levels (especially agriculture, but also industry). Redesigning monetary and fiscal policies in order to recover the control of monetary creation and key variables. Realigning macroeconomic policies to prevent extractivism and resource curse. Harmonization of macroeconomic and agricultural policies and conservation policies, especially in the realm of natural protected areas. (Nadal & Shrivastava)
