Biodiversity matters for all including business. Business engagement for biodiversity is getting more relevant issue not only for conservation community but also for business and government. Many approaches have been being tested to create more enabling environment to accelerate business engagement such as certifications, economic evaluation, impact evaluation, voluntary standards etc. One of the emerging approaches is creating national and regional platforms on business and biodiversity. CBD also recognizes this fact and COP decision X/21 invites parties "to support the establishment of national and regional business and biodiversity initiatives and to strive towards a global partnership on business and biodiversity by inviting ongoing initiatives and other interested stakeholders to be part of the business and biodiversity initiative…"
Actually, there are a couple of such national and regional initiatives established recently such as Biodiversity in Good Companies(Germany), Canadian Business and Biodiversity Council (Canada), Japan Business and Biodiversity Partnership (Japan), Taskforce Biodiversity (Netherland), and EU Business @ Biodiversity Platform and many are under development in Brazil, Sri Lanka and so forth. Although these are all national and regional business and biodiversity platforms, there are many variations among them. Most of these platforms are consist of private companies with government agencies but some also include NGOs and academia. While some platforms focus on particular sectors others don´t have such restriction. Development and dissemination of tools, standards, codes of conducts, awarding schemes can often be seen in many cases.
This event will provide an opportunity to showcase some of these experiences in different parts of the world and also share achievements, challenges and lessons learned and form these experiences.
