Ecosystems in Life Cycle Assessment to help businesses in their decision making process

Businesses are increasingly aware of the importance of biodiversity. In order to strategically manage impacts on biodiversity, there must be a robust and easy-to-use metric that is aligned and comparable across industries and users.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a common tool used to assess impacts on human health and the environment throughout the value chain, including impacts on biodiversity. LCA models are easy-to-use and provide quantitative results that can be assessed at a relatively low cost. However, current LCA models are a simplified representation of a complex reality and a limitation is the lack local field data , modeling only potential impacts on ecosystems. In order to evolve toward better assessing actual impacts , it is crucial to bring together BIODIVERSIY EXPERTS, LCA DEVELOPERS, and BUSINESS to discuss technical issues and identify how to move forward.
This discussion will create a platform to satisfy the needs of businesses by leveraging existing expertise in biodiversity and LCA. Specifically, the objectives are to:
• Identify the strengths and weaknesses of current LCA models in assessing biodiversity impacts
• Identify where existing LCA models can be strengthened by integrating the expertise and experience of biodiversity experts
Work to improve, validate, and harmonize existing methods for measuring impacts on biodiversity and aligning data collection and LCA models
