What Works and What does not Work: Examination of Dugong Conservation Measures and Strategies

Various measures and strategies for dugong conservation have been developed and proposed at national and international levels; their implementation always takes place in the context of the "local." Successful implementation of dugong conservation measures and strategies thus implies adaption and modification of such measures and strategies in accordance with the needs of the local context. In fact, it is flexibility and capacity to adapt to change or necessary situations that are vital to dugong conservation.

In our Knowledge Café, we invite practitioners of dugong conservation from dugong range countries/communities to share their specific knowledge, experiences, ideas and insights on their respective dugong conservation measures and strategies with focus on the notions of adaptation and modification.

The participants discuss the specific challenges they face in dugong conservation in their local contexts as well as conservation measure and strategies at their disposal. Dugong conservation measures and strategies may be in forms of legislation, MPA and its variants, economic incentives, technological development or combination of any of them. The participants are expected to detail their respective measures and strategies.

The participants are then asked to present specific examples of how these measures and strategies have been modified or adapted in their local contexts as well as what enabled them to do so. Traditional knowledge, cultural values, alternative economies, network support all have the potential to provide basis for measure and strategy modification and adaptatoin. The participants are expected to articulate and conceptualize these factors.

The other participants are also asked to provide advice to help solve or mitigate the challenges that the other participants have not been able to solve. It is hoped that, through this exercise, the participants can envision how to strength their flexibility and capacity for dugong conservation.
