Forest Partnerships, big and small, that really work!

In this session, we will present how and why the private sector, NGOs, Indigenous Peoples, civil society and governments are uniting to sustainably manage forests. We will demonstrate that these partnerships go beyond conserving and restoring forests. They decrease the often perceived (if not real) frictional relationships between stakeholder groups. Although complex and requiring trade-offs, partnerships are in the best interests of all because they build everyone’s capacity in understanding/respecting the position that each hold and why.

Participants will learn about national/international networks and alliances such as the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, International Model Forest Network, ENPI FLEG program and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC International). What do these different models for promoting sustainable forest management have in common and how do they support the strengthening of partnerships to ensure lasting impact?

Through facilitated discussion amongst panellists and the audience, the session will explore the real impact of the featured partnerships and projects, reflect on challenges encountered in implementation and finally, distill the ingredients for successful partnerships.
