GSPC(Global Strategy for Plant Conservation) 2020 and Conservation Strategy of Arboretum and Botanical Garden

In order to implement the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) 2000-2010, botanical gardens and arboretums of countries centering around the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) have established strategy for plant conservation in various ways. However, it has been difficult to establish a clear strategy for 5 objects and 16 targets suggested in the GSPC 2000-2010, which has left much to be desired in achieving the goal of the GSPC for the recent 10 years.

For a successful implementation of the GSPC 2011-2020 that has been newly established in line with the upcoming 2012 World Conservation Congress (WCC), it is necessary to make proper action plans.

The Korea National Arboretum has submitted a motion to establish strategy for plant conservation in each region in cooperation with the BGCI, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the South China Botanical Garden, the Ministry of Environment, the Korea National Park Service, and the Korean Association for Conservation of Nature, which aimed at increasing a role of botanical gardens and arboretums in the East Asia. The details are as follows.

Acknowledging that the East Asian region represents almost all biogeographical regions, including species diversity and habitat heterogeneity. And the GSPC is a vital tool to work together to halt the degradation trends of plant diversity in the region.

Requests the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), and regional plant conservation bodies to undertake activities for plant conservation in East Asia

Calls on the umbrella structure under the East Asia Botanic Gardens Network to facilitate the GSPC 2020 targets in the region.

Urges all countries in the region to develop the East Asia Regional Strategy for Plant Conservation under the GSPC.
