This event will include the presentation of two new Commission awards followed by a reception.
Presentation of a CEC Award for best material in Spanish on environmental education about climate change adaptation. This contest was created in order to recognize and encourage environmental education specialists, from the formal and informal sector, who have created educational materials in Spanish, addressing the food production sector, as well as policy decision makers in the field of agriculture and fisheries for climate change adaptation.
A reception in honour of the first winner of the CEM Luc Hoffmann Award (LHA) for local leadership in Ecosystem Management. Germano Woehl Jnr from Brazil will be awarded the LHA for the work he and his wife did to conserve, restore and sustainably manage the Brazilian Atlantic Forests. Filled with anguish by so much destruction, Germano decided to photograph the deforested areas and file dozens of complaints to federal and state environmental agencies, as well to state and federal courts. These complaints resulted in at least 400 infractors being fined and prosecuted. At the same time Germano decided to improve awareness of Brazilian society of nature conservation. In 2003, Germano and his wife received support from AVINA to found a NGO – the Instituto Rã-bugio para Conservação da Biodiversidade, which has provided environmental awareness to 50,000 students and 2,400 teachers A short documentary (3-6 minutes) will be shown at the reception organized in his honour.
