Solutions for a cultivated planet: Turning forgotten hectares into forests, food and other benefits through landscape restoration

At the moment, much investment in land use is measured in terms of narrow single benefit outcomes, be they food or fiber or carbon or something else. The landscape approach is a key element for moving toward greater forest and landscape functionality and productivity that will benefit rural areas in an immediate economic sense and also in ensuring a future generation of the goods and services people will need to ensure their social and economic survival. Participants will exchange views with presenters of case studies from the US Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program, the International Model Forest Network and others through a ‘marketplace’. These experiences will illustrate how different land uses can be reconciled through scaling up to the landscape level and through restoration of lost forests and degraded lands, and the benefits that flow from such an approach, including jobs and biodiversity. During the marketplace visits, individual participants will be interviewed on film on the key building blocks for turning forgotten hectares into forests, food and other benefits through landscape restoration. A brief film with be compiled and made available to a global audience through the IUCN and GPFLR websites and shown at subsequent international events.
