In recognition of the urgent need to provide financial support to those passionate people dedicated to preventing species extinctions, the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund was announced at the last Congress, in Barcelona, with an endowment of 25m Euros. Since then, the Fund has spent almost $8m in small grants to conservationists across the world. This event would intend to briefly introduce the Fund, provide an update on the past four years, and provide an opportunity to ask questions.
15:30-16:30 Mapping threats to biodiversity
Come hear about exciting new work between Microsoft Research and the IUCN, including a short talk and demonstration of the new Red List Threat Mapping Tool prototype. This online application allows people to draw, search, and save spatial and other information on threats to biodiversity - as well as associate those threats with current and future Red Listed species. The majority of the session will be devoted to interaction and discussion regarding the tool's current and potential functionality. This will be an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard and influence the direction of an important new data gathering device for the Red Listing process.
