Developing an IUCN Green List of well-managed protected areas

The IUCN Green List of Well Managed Protected Areas, when fully developed, will encourage, measure, celebrate and share the success of protected areas in reaching good standards of management. To celebrate the launch of this groundbreaking global initiative, a host of VIPS from countries that have or are planning Green List pilot programs will talk about the Green List and its implementation for their protected areas and communities.

The Green List is designed to assist national governments and their community partners in conservation to meet the commitments embodied in the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and particularly Target 11. Planned for a full launch at the 2014 World Parks Congress, the Green List’s standards will set a bar for protected area management that rewards those that have achieved excellence and encourages others to elevate their standards so that their protected areas will meet their full potential. There are currently three pilot programs underway, and several countries have plans to begin their own pilots in the near future. A short film on one of these pilots in Colombia will be shown.
