Reaching and surpassing Aichi Target 11 through the appropriate recognition of ICCAs

This workshop to be held at the Community Ma–eul in the morning session of the 8th of September will offer a wide view of the potential and roles of indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation-- an important component of management effectiveness, good governance and sustainability/ resilience. Participants will be accompanied to:

(i) explore examples and defining characteristics of Indigenous Peoples’ and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs for short);

ii) interpret and apply the qualitative requirements of PoWPA and Target 11 of the CBD Aichi Strategic Plan (e.g. “effectively and equitably managed”; "other effective area-based conservation measures");

(iii) identify context-appropriate avenues and tools to recognise and support ICCAs as part of PoWPA and with regard to CBD Aichi Target 11;

(iv) explore protected areas and "other effective area-based conservation measures" that combine different management categories and governance types;

(v) illustrate standards suited to listing ICCAs as part of WDPA and/or the ICCA Registry; and

(vi) open up and debate issues at the heart of some IUCN proposed Resolutions, including the one on “Facilitating implementation of CBD Aichi Target 11” and the one on "Respecting, Recognising and Supporting ICCAs".

The above topics will be introduced and discussed by professionals and practitioners from many different world regions. The active contribution of all workshop participants will be facilitated.
