During recent years, many arguments have been advanced about the importance of protected areas and their role in shaping a sustainable future. At the same time, there is evidence that increasingly urbanized populations visit protected areas less, and there is a continuous flow of decisions that affect protected areas negatively including through mineral exploitation, infrastructure development or poorly resourced management.
This forum will provide CEOs of the protected areas an opportunity to engage in putting together a response to this situation, working among colleagues for developing goals and strategies for guiding future initiatives, and spreading a powerful message to the world.
For this purpose, the forum will focus on 'Protected Areas + : Connecting People with Nature' and the programme is provisionally composed of four parts.
- Presentation of IUCN-WCPA's Global "Building Awareness" Campaign;
- Opening remarks by National Park CEOs;
- Facilitated dialogue among National Park, Business and Community Leaders;
- A concluding Global National Park CEOs Declaration
The forum will be invitation only.
The World Protected Areas Leadership Forum members who has been providing a platform for in-depth discussion on these issues will be key invitees. To build up the partnership of NP leaders with other sectors of society, distinguished journalists, business leaders, city authorities, and etc. are to be invited to take part in the meeting.
