How to get involved in the World Heritage Convention: A Users Guide for IUCN Members

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention is one of the most important global conservation instruments and has almost universal adoption amongst the nations of the world. It provides a unique framework for securing the conservation of over 200 of the world´s most important natural areas, such as the Serengeti, Galapagos and the Great Barrier Reef, recognized as being of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity as a whole. The Convention gives unique reach to a network covering 10% of land and sea included in the world´s protected areas, with unique connections to cultural landscapes and between nature and culture.

This workshop would provide practical information to IUCN members on how they can get involved in the World Heritage Convention, and enable IUCN to advise the Convention more effectively as a result. Topics will include:

• IUCN´s role as Advisory Body to the World Heritage Committee, the executive body of the Convention, on natural sites and what this means
• WH Convention basics – Outstanding Universal Value - what is it?, the role of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the annual World Heritage Committee meetings, Committee decisions and their implications
• Evaluations of new sites – Evaluation missions, the role of reviewers, the World Heritage Panel
• Monitoring of threats to existing sites - Tools such as the Consultation Questionnaires, Monitoring missions, IUCN´s World Heritage network, State of Conservation reports
• The Natural Heritage Outlook Report , IUCN´s new knowledge product on World Heritage providing independent assessments of the state of conservation of all 211 natural sites.
