Models for Funder-Community Relationships: Grassroots-Led Conservation Strategies

Local communities are on the front lines of conserving the world’s resources. Meanwhile, they have little to no access to the financial resources they need to successfully defend and manage their natural environments. Experienced practitioners of the Greengrants Alliance Funds such as Samdhana Institute and the Center for Socio-Environmental Fund CASA will share successful, locally-based ecological and social justice support funds that effectively channel appropriate resources directly to local conservation leaders.

Key questions include:

• What resources are most important for communities to effectively conserve biodiversity, improve governance and natural resource management, and promote equitable access to natural resources across lines of race, gender, and geography?
• How can organizational funding structures strengthen local leadership in meaningful ways?
• How can the conservation community build philanthropy to increase resources for grassroots-led conservation strategies?

This session is hosted by the Greengrants Alliance of Funds, a coalition of grassroots grantmakers committed to increasing resources, including small grants, for community-led environmental and social justice efforts across the globe. Everyone interested in innovative funding systems that target people that matter is encouraged to participate and gain insight and jointly discover possibilities to develop new partnership models.
