The Yasuní-ITT Initiative is a pioneer and a holistic proposal lead by the Government of Ecuador since 2007. Yasuní National Park, located in Ecuador´s Amazon rainforest, is on of the most important biodiversity hotspot in the planet, as well as home of indigenous cultures living in voluntary isolation. This presentation will explain the financial mechanism behind the Yasuní-ITT Initiative, which tends to indefinitely abstain from the extraction of millions of barrels of oil from the ITT field, preventing the emission of 407 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Certainly, this project aims to promote nature conservation, sustainable development and climate change mitigation through the involvement of several stake holders, including international and regional cooperation, NGOs and the business sector. The Yasuní- ITT Initiative presents a new sustainable economic development model which aims at implementing a holistic proposal that articulates biodiversity, natural resources and economy.
