Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Mining in South Africa

The potential of mining to impact biodiversity is well known, but little has been done in South Africa, one of the world´s major mining countries, to assist mining companies to reduce their impacts on biodiversity and contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. Instead they have been expected to show initiative or follow international examples of good practice, such as the International Council on Mining and Metal´s (ICMM) Good Practice Guidance (GPG) for Mining and Biodiversity, which was developed through ICMM´s dialogue with IUCN.

The South African Mining and Biodiversity Forum (SAMBF) was established in 2005 in an effort to enhance biodiversity management in the mining industry. The forum brings together stakeholders from industry, conservation bodies and government, with the aim of providing an opportunity for cross-sectoral interaction and cooperation aimed at improving biodiversity conservation, management and performance in the mining industry within the South African legislative framework. The forum developed a guideline for mining companies and their stakeholders on how to address biodiversity conservation and management.

The knowledge cafe will:
- Share the multi-stakeholder process we followed and recommend this as an approach that could be adopted elsewhere;
- Show an example of how mining companies can be guided on how to address biodiversity conservation;
- Provide an example of how international initiatives such as the IUCN-ICMM dialogue have been applied at the national level.
