Since 2004, IUCN has worked with Sakhalin Energy in order to provide advice and recommendations on how the company can minimize risks associated with its operations on the western gray whales and their habitat. We are proud of our mitigation success to date. Following advice from the Panel, the company has revised some of its operation procedures and construction plans to reduce risks to the whales. For example, undersea pipelines were re-routed to avoid feeding areas, a decision that required laying 180 additional km of pipe. Measures to monitor and minimize the impacts of a seismic survey on whales were developed collaboratively by the WGWAP and Sakhalin Energy and implemented by the company in a large-scale survey in 2010. Among other things, safety zones around the survey vessel were closely observed and real-time acoustic and visual monitoring was used to prevent whales from being exposed to damaging doses of noise.
