H.E. Mr. Lee, Maan-ee, former Minister of Environment of the Republic of Korea, is one of the national leaders who have made a concerted effort to improve and enhance environmental value and sustainable development.
He has facilitated experts groups, local governmental organizations, and civil societies to aggressively participate in planning and implementing policies orienting the environment and climate change. He has also played a leading role in making people’s life environmentally-friendly.
As Minister of Environment of Korea from March 2008 to May 2011, he had significantly contributed to making a consistent effort to upgrade a Korean policy of “low carbon, green growth” into a future strategy for human beings. And he had dedicated himself to strengthening voluntary cooperation networks such as the Local Agenda 21, the New Community Movement Organization (known as the New Village Movement or the Saemaul Movement) and so on.
He is currently chairman of the LOHAS Korea Forum, representative of the Damyang Eco Forum, representative of the Governance 21 Club, and member of the World Wike City Federation. Especially, as chairman of the Organizing Committee for Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013, he is ambitiously preparing for a dynamic event to show sustainability for human beings with his seasoned experiences and expertise on international environmental events (such as the IUCN World Conservation Congress, the Ramsar Convention, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and so on).
