Lyonpo Dorji served as the Prime Minister of Bhutan twice in addition to his being a cabinet minister for ten years. He was the Minister of Agriculture and Forests and then Works and Human Settlement, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Acting Minister for Finance. He has also held other important posts such as the Speaker of the Parliament, Chairman of the National Environment Commission, Chairman of Gross National Happiness Commission, Chairman of Bhutan Trust Fund for Environment Conservation among many others.
His longest tenure, out of a long and colorful career, was in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. He started as a practicing veterinarian, becoming the Director of Livestock Department, Director General of Agriculture Department, Secretary in charge of agriculture, livestock and forests; and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forests. He served as a Governor on International Fund for Agriculture Development and International Center for Integrated Mountain Development. As Prime Minister of Bhutan, he led the Bhutanese delegation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, Global Mountain Summit in Bishkek and 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit in Japan among others. He has also led delegations to World Water Forums, 6th COP on Biodiversity and World Urban Forum among others.
