The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation 2011-2020: Implementation from the global to the local level
Botanic Gardens Conservation International, UK
This presentation will provide an overview of the current status of implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), taking into account recent meetings of the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation (GPPC), and the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The presentation will also describe the role played by BGCI in supporting capacity building and awareness raising of the GSPC, including an introduction to the GSPC toolkit. The presentation will highlight the main GSPC targets of relevance to botanic gardens – ex situ conservation and education and provide examples of how botanic gardens can contribute to GSPC implementation. BGCI’s database of plants in cultivation in botanic gardens (PlantSearch) will be introduced as the main tool to measure national and global progress towards the ex situ target of the GSPC (Target 8) and information will be provided on how Korean botanic gardens can participate in this effort.
