Advocating for Indigenous Rights: From Local Indigenous Communities to Global Action

Advocacy of indigenous rights takes on many forms. From community organization and activism, to legal and policy advocacy, the progress regarding the rights of indigenous peoples has required numerous tools and numerous strategies. This knowledge café is a dynamic exploration of those tools and strategies.

Led by community advocate Dr. Trisha Kehaulani Watson (Native Hawaiian / female) and current Maori Trustee Jamie Tuuta (Ngati Mutunga), this knowledge café is focus on bringing together advocates on indigenous rights in conservation work to discuss on-going efforts to enhance decision making authority for indigenous peoples across the globe. Starting from a discussion on the efficacy of a rights-based approach to conservation and its potential intersect with ecofeminism in indigenous communities, the goal is to engender a dynamic and thoughtful dialogue on our individual experiences to identify commonalities and differences. The goal is to develop a shared vision for publication on the Congress´ IUCN Conservation e-Platform.
