The objective is to illustrate how a coffee business can integrate NGO´s nature conservation in its operations.
By partnering with Rainforest Alliance, using their nature conservation principles, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ program integrates best practices specific to the protection of the environment that answer directly to biodiversity impacts.
Biodiversity conservation is the core of the Rainforest Alliance philosophy and actions, their leadership in developing agricultural sustainability standards are well recognized. This expertise has inspired Nespresso and led to a close collaboration which included developing tailor‐made tools adapted to the Nespresso coffee farm community, compatible with the Rainforest Alliance certification standard.
By eliminating deforestation, conserving the water sources and recycling waste water and solid waste, fertilizing according to soil analysis while eliminating dangerous pesticides and preserving natural areas along with other biodiversity friendly practices, the AAA farmer and families become active actors in the biodiversity preservation.
At mid‐2011, 43´548 farmers are participating in the AAA program representing 160´000 hectares of coffee plantations in eight countries, from Latin America to India.
This program is based on 32 criteria including 14 Rainforest Alliance critical sustainability criteria where 8 of them answer directly to environmental protection and Biodiversity:
Susceptible Species Protection
Rational water use
Conservation of Natural Water Sources
The poster will show results of the compliance rate for each of the 8 family criteria with a total average rate around 70%.
