Building capacity on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) to climate change in islands

IUCN is currently engaged in adaptation strategies to climate change to build resilience of communities, ecosystems and resource-dependent livelihoods in the face of climate change. Geographically widely distributed islands are considered to be unique and valuable ecosystems that are threatened by the impacts of climate change. These threats affect islands´ ecosystem functioning, underpinning livelihoods and human wellbeing.

Islands are most often severely affected by climate change due to their high susceptibility. Local islands´ communities face several threats caused by climate change related changes in ecosystems. Since adaptation is a key element of resilience, Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) approaches can contribute to build resilient society as well as ecosystems by reducing vulnerability of local communities to climate change.

The training “Building capacity on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) to climate change in islands” will build capacities on CBA approaches to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of local communities to the adverse effects of climate change in island environments. Several organizations have already developed useful and successful approaches and tools for CBA for islands.

This event will explore the lessons, the uses and benefits from some of those approaches.

The training session includes the following modules:
1) Technical module: How to conduct vulnerability assessments on island communities.
2) Technical module: Explore tools and methodologies to design and implement CBA for islands.
3) Experience sharing module: Learn from utilization and application of existing tools and methodologies used in islands.

Attending to this Conservation Campus will allow you to:
- Conduct community vulnerability assessment in islands environments.
- Apply tools and methodologies to design and implement CBA in islands.
- Identify successful approaches, potential obstacles and appropriate responses to implementing CBA in islands.
