An International Workshop to Develop Key Strategies for the Establishment and Promotion of the Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (AP-BON) at Local, National, and Regional Levels

Recently, a global Biodiversity Observation Network, called GEO BON, was initiated under GEO (Group on Earth Observations) and GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems). In addition, the regional activities of the Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (AP-BON) for the promotion of biodiversity observation and conservation utilizing currently existing networks at national and regional levels were initiated in the region of Asia and the Pacific. As the ultimate goals of the AP-BON are quite consistent with those of the IUCN, it is strongly needed to develop the strategies and action plans of the AP-BON in further cooperation with the IUCN. Efforts are being made in linking the network activities of the AP-BON with those of the IUCN at the national and regional levels.

During the 2012 Jeju WCC, we would like to let the people know about the importance of networking biodiversity observation at national, regional and global levels. Development of the strategies for the cooperation and the promotion of the network activities for biodiversity observation and conservation are thought to be the core actions to be further discussed during the 2012 Jeju WCC. During the workshop held at 17:00 – 18:30 at room 202 of Jeju ICC, on Saturday, 8th September 2012, diverse issues for the establishment and promotion of the AP-BON will be presented and panel discussion will be followed. Updates will be made on the motion proposed and follow-ups will be further discussed in the workshop.

This workshop is sponsored by the Ecological Society of Korea and co-sponsored by 1) Nature Policy Division, Ministry of Environment, Korea; 2) Ministry of the Environment, Japan; 3) Korea Forest Service; 4) Korea National Park Service; 5) Wildlife Watch Group, Nepal; 6) Center for Natural Resource Studies, Bangladesh; 7) Japan Wildlife Research Center (JWRC), Japan; 8) ASEAN Center for Biodiversity; 9) PRAGMA; and many other members of IUCN and IUCN National Committee of Korea...
