Global Forest Information Service - Global Forest Related Informationa Sharing Through a Single Gateway

In May 2004, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) agreed that the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) should become a joint CPF initiative. In response to the request of the CPF, IUFRO, in close collaboration with FAO and CIFOR, prepared a concept paper for the further development of GFIS as a joint CPF initiative. Based on this concept paper the initiative was approved at the 13th Meeting of the CPF on 6th September 2004 in New York. Today GFIS is led by IUFRO, together with FAO, CIFOR, IGRAF and the UNFF Secretariat. The Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) is an internet gateway that provides the access to world forest-related information through a single entry point(www.gfis.net). The GFIS would contribute to the enhanced sustainable forest development, promote informed public engagement in forest policy development, improve forest-related decision-making, and promote the understanding of complex forestry issues by facilitating the exchange of forestry data information and knowledge among the forest-concerned people of the world.
