Participatory action for climate resilience: case studies fromChoiseul and Manus provinces (Solomon Islands; PNG)

In 2011, the community of Boe Boe in the Solomon Islands, undertook activities designed to understand the potential impacts of climate change and to plan for the future:
Over two weeks, all the community, constructed a physical, hands-on scale model made of wood-and paper measuring 3X2m. A flat contour map of Boe Boe grew into something that people could see, touch and connect with. Everyone then used the model to discuss and map important stories: the history of Boe Boe village; the expansion of the protected area network and future impacts such as outside development pressures and climate change. At the same time, experts in GIS created a ┬┤Digital Elevation Model┬┤ of the Boe Boe area. This allowed for real-time integration of science with local knowledge. Community members and scientists worked together to ground-truth key coastal features, in particular, those areas most sensitive to climate changes such as sea-level rise and storm surges. The modeling activities were filmed. This video demonstrates the commitment of the community to managing their resources and planning for the future and will serve as an inspiration to other communities in the Pacific. It will also be influential at many levels from local to international as the experiences of Boe Boe are shared widely. This work is gaining interest and momentum across the Pacific as well as in the small community of Boe Boe itself where adaptation ideas are already being put into action.
