Future pressures and opportunities for conservation introductions: what might be moved and where, responsibly?

IUCN´s 1998 Guidelines for Reintroduction are a globally applied set of principles available in 7 languages, forming the basis of many taxon-specific versions. Despite use and application worldwide, the Guidelines required updating in light of acute, new pressures facing species, and to better guide the deliberate translocations of plants and animals proposed ostensibly for conservation purposes.
In addition, the reality of climate change is stimulating proposals for proactive ´assisted colonisation´ - the deliberate moving of organisms from their current ranges to sites, based on human judgement, to be more suitable in future. Such ambitious translocations raise critical issues around ecological certainty, risk and decision-making.
An SSC Task Force of the Reintroduction and Invasive Species Specialist Groups has developed a new product, Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations. These encompass all interventions such as relatively low-risk population reintroduction to the more contentious areas of assisted colonisation and ecological replacement.
This Knowledge Café will be participatory in order to share know-how on the communication and implementation of complex policy and practice recommendations.
The Café is a valuable opportunity to promote responsible translocations and a forum to discuss and identify translocation opportunities. We expect the new Guidelines to generate diverse and strong views on the future shape of conservation.
