SOS -Save Our Species is a global initiative whose objective is to conserve threatened species and their habitats. Founded by IUCN, the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility, SOS offers unmatched species expertise and makes grants to the conservation community, local conservation stewards, and local communities throughout the world where and when it will have the most impact.
SOS offers an engaging platform for the private sector with tangible on-the-ground results from a diverse portfolio of projects. It combines funding, credibility and the authoritative science of its three founding members with the resources and ingenuity of the private sector.
Nokia is the first business partner. In addition to supporting conservation projects, Nokia helps raise awareness of the importance of species protection by the use of innovative mobile technology.
France through the Fonds français pour l’environnement mondial is the first government joining the initiative.
SOS is currently looking for more partners, in particular companies across industries to join the initiative and assist in explaining the urgency to protect the diversity of life on earth, on which we all depend.
Save Our Species is managed through a secretariat housed within IUCN. Grants are allocated according to strategic directions identified in consultation with IUCN Species Survival Commission, the largest global network of species experts.
