The 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress: moving beyond targets, for protected areas that help address global challenges (WCPA official session)

The official launch event of the road to Sydney in 2014. The IUCN World Parks Congress has set the agenda for protected areas globally since the first event in 1962. At the last WPC held in Durban in 2003, the Durban Action Plan laid the foundation for the CBD’s Programme of Work on Protected Areas. For the 6th IUCN World Parks Congress, the challenge is even greater. The far-reaching targets now agreed in the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 rely heavily on successful protected area systems on land and sea, that are effectively managed and equitably governed in every country and in areas beyond national jurisdictions. But now the task is to address the gaps in knowledge and capacity and put protected area systems and institutions to work in addressing some of the most profound challenges the planet has ever faced. Climate change, natural disasters, water and food shortages, health and poverty are all areas where protected areas can play a significant role as natural solutions. In this workshop, the key themes of the 2014 World Parks Congress will be debated, the host country commitment will be celebrated, and IUCN members and partners will be engaged in taking the issues forward to 2014 and the decade that follows.
