Course Agenda

Workshop Summary and Agenda
In this course, we will cover the basic principles of estimating forest carbon sequestration and discuss the various approaches available, as well as the differences between project scale and national scale inventories. Methodology will be consistent with the IPCC protocols. Participants will have an opportunity work together to develop estimates of forest carbon sequestration using inventory data and IPCC methods, and may bring their own data to work with.

Session updates

The agenda is being finalized and will be posted soon! Topics include the basics of the forest carbon cycle, the major carbno pools and how to measure them, and the most common estimation approaches used for different spatial scales. We'll learn about the different reasons to measure forest carbon, and hear about forest carbon estimation from people involved in developing monitoring and verification systems in a developing nation, selecting projects for the Global Enviornment Facility of the World Bank, and working with projects related to payments for ecosystem services.

What to bring to the workshop

If you are attending this workshop, a laptop is not required. However, it will be helpful to bring a laptop, since we will be working on calculation exercises during the workshop. In addition, if you have your own inventory data for a project area, you should bring it with you if you would like to use it during the class.

Background reading and resources

The background reading is not necessary for participants to complete prior to attending the session. For those students lacking a background in forest inventory, the inventory guidelines document will be helpful to read prior to the course. Please note that this document is available only in English. The list of websites provides links to background documents, methods, and protocols for forest sector related GHG accounting and inventory, forest carbon inventory, as well as related programs.
