Approaches to enhance social and gender equity and value indigenous knowledge through integrated ecosystem-based planning

Many studies have indicated that an ecosystem services concept is key to link the environment-development nexus and in particular that of biodiversity conservation with poverty alleviation. While remarkable research has been conducted on biodiversity protection, relevant findings and policy outcomes have not created significant impact on policy formulation and decision-making processes of development planning, mainly due to a lack of tools, models and methods for both decision-making and implementation.

Rights for REDD+ or REDD+ for rights?: successful experiences and remaining challenges

One of the most controversial issues on REDD+ is the one related to the clarification of the rights over the land, trees; rights on the use, right on the carbon. The range of positions on this debate is broad and diverse making agreements difficult at local, national and international level. REDD+ is a new terminology but what is understood as REDD activities are forest practices that indigenous peoples and forest practitioners have carry out for long.

Learning from the Guardians of Sacred Natural Sites - dialogue and exchange

High level Policy makers, institutional representatives, conservation and civil society leaders will be brought together with and custodians to evaluate the options for international and national policy and practice in order to better legally recognise, safeguard and conserve Sacred Natural Sites.

Youth Engagement and Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability: Toward an IUCN-wide Action Plan

Workshop Description

We strongly feel that youth engagement and intergenerational partnership are essential for achieving biodiversity outcomes, including more effective and equitable governance of nature’s use. In Barcelona, the Members’ Assembly adopted Resolution 4.098 on Intergenerational Partnership and, emerging from Commission Young Professionals Networks, the Task Force on Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability has been established to support IUCN's vision of “a just world that values and conserves nature.”

Workshop objectives:

Preserving nature for both conservation and human health outcomes

There is significant evidence that supports the connection between a healthy environment and a healthy society. It has long been recognised that nature provides many societal benefits = healthy parks sustain healthy people!

Planning for ecosystem-based adaptation: coming to terms with a complex concept in a disparate world

Ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) is quickly becoming a buzz-word in climate change and nature conservation policy arenas. Effective EBA programs and projects require a careful analysis of this complex concept, which attempts to link social systems and ecosystems in creating resilience to climate change impacts. For instance, an effective EBA program may require inter-sectorial coordination in traditionally antagonistic realms, such as agricultural extension and nature conservation.

Young people's role in forest conservation

Young people are living a new stage in history in which they must decide to transform their lifestyle into a sustainable one, creating conditions that will enable them to have better opportunities.
Overall, young people do not have any decision power regarding the use of natural resources. However, they do have an entrepreneurial spirit that allows them to take part in the protection and conservation of forests. These actions have different levels of impact based on their knowledge, institutional support and other influential factors.

Giving Force to Conservation Laws: Environmental Adjudication

Effective judicial environmental enforcement is needed worldwide to safeguard biodiversity, curb greenhouse gas emissions, abate pollution, secure rights to clean water, and foster sustainable development for Earth´s growing population. National environmental laws often fall short in implementation, compliance, and enforcement. Access to justice, critically important to the rule of law and sustainable development, is lacking in many nations, and justice, particularly with regards to environmental issues, is not yet accessible.

Supporting Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in World Heritage Site Management through Rights Based Approaches

World Heritage sites are established under the World Heritage Convention; they are key places for the conservation of cultural and natural values of the world. IUCN is the official Advisory Body to the World Heritage Committee on natural and mixed World Heritage sites, and as such evaluates new site nominations and monitors the state of conservation of inscribed sites. As many of these sites overlap with traditional lands, the involvement of indigenous peoples and local communities in the establishment and management of World Heritage sites is paramount.
