The Power of Local Action: Communities on the Frontlines of Sustainable Development

The Equator Initiative brings together the United Nations, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. Through awarding the biennial Equator Prize, bringing local and indigenous voices to international processes, and documenting best practice in local sustainable development, the initiative has helped to build the evidence base for putting community-based solutions at the forefront of efforts to deliver a more sustainable future.

Reaching and surpassing Aichi Target 11 through the appropriate recognition of ICCAs

This workshop to be held at the Community Ma–eul in the morning session of the 8th of September will offer a wide view of the potential and roles of indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation-- an important component of management effectiveness, good governance and sustainability/ resilience. Participants will be accompanied to:

(i) explore examples and defining characteristics of Indigenous Peoples’ and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs for short);

Internet Portals on Conservation, Rights and Governance

The growing use of computer technology is allowing a wide range of stakeholders to easily obtain and share information and to actively engage in conceptual development and project formulation. Web-users can now seamlessly share information and insights in a collaborative space, thus helping to build capacity and promote understanding on complex topics, such as conservation, rights and governance.

Rethinking Sustainability in Melanesia

Share approach underlying IUCN role ‘Strengthening Environmental Law’ in Coral Triangle Initiative – Pacific (Phase 2) project in 5 countries, to stimulate discussion/thinking about harnessing skills and knowledge of civil society (private legal profession in this case) to assist governments and communities to develop effective and equitable environmental governance for a just world.

Youth at Congress: Strengthening community voices towards a ‘Just World’

This event highlights the role of empowering community voice in conservation policy development at the IUCN through examples and activities led by youth. It provides an informal space for young professionals and community leaders to engage the diversity of participants at the IUCN Congress (i.e. government officials, academics, NGOs, community representatives, and students) as an intergenerational community to discuss ways for youth to access decision-making processes at Congress and other IUCN forums.

Launch of Investing in Locally Controlled Forests Guide

Local, national and international groups and alliances of forest rights holders are working with the IUCN through the Growing Forest Partnership initiative and The Forests Dialogue to explore how to ensure that appropriate support and investments reach the people on the ground – “investing in locally controlled forestry”.
