Partners in Conservation Capacity Building

This networking event will provide an opportunity for interactive discussion among individuals and organizations involved in capacity building initiatives to address biodiversity conservation challenges in Asia and beyond.

Book launch: "Evidence-based conservation: lessons from the Lower Mekong"

There is a considerable gap between the science of conservation biology and the design and execution of biodiversity conservation projects in the field. Science is often failing to inform the practice of conservation, which remains largely experience-based. The main reason is the poor accessibility of evidence on the effectiveness of different interventions. This is the basis for this book adopting an 'evidence-based approach', modeled on the systematic reviews used in health sciences and now being applied to many policy arenas.

Re-introduction of the Asian black bear: Working towards the recovery of a healthy ecosystem

Asiatic black bears (Ursusthibetanus)are distributed wildly in Asia, from Japan in the east to Iran in the west. They are Vulnerable (IUCN category), AppendixⅠ (CITES listing) and endangered species categoryⅠ in South Korea.
So to augment this population, a reintroduction project was initiated, with the aim of establishing a self-sustaining population in Jirisan National Park.

Conserving drylands biodiversity for sustainable land management (book launch)

The Publication "Conserving Dryland Biodiversity" was jointly produced by the United Nations Convention to Combat desertification, UNEP-WCMC, The World Commission on Protected Areas and the IUCN Global Drylands Initiative.

Conservation finance for protected areas, gaps, comparative analysis and alternatives in a dynamice debate

The resilience of conservation initiatives, and their results and impact, depends in great measure on the availability and use of funding. In addition to government funding and revenues, there is often a gap, either for capital or recurrent expenditure, or to invest in revenue generation or benefit flows. The development of innovative financial arrangements that will implement and sustain conservation efforts over time, including best practices of governance, accountability and financial management, is a key aspect to address degradation of nature.

Launching a global partnership for capacity development

This event will celebrate two exciting new projects that will enhance protected area capacity development: The launch of Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Project (BIOPAMA) and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on protected area capacity development between the IUCN and the Convention for Biological Diversity.
