Can a profitable business also be profitable for nature and create a virtuous circle?

The objective is to illustrate how a coffee business can integrate NGO´s nature conservation in its operations.
By partnering with Rainforest Alliance, using their nature conservation principles, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ program integrates best practices specific to the protection of the environment that answer directly to biodiversity impacts.

Searching for resilience in sustainable development: learning journeys in conservation

The starting point for this workshop will be an interactive audio visual presentation of the key findings of Dr John Blewitt´s and Professor Daniella Tilbury (re)search for resilience in sustainable development. They have spent a year interviewing key people in the NGO, business and private sectors about resilience and the learning journeys they, their organisations, societies or cultures have undertaken. The people interviewed included major decision makers in business, public figures, activists, community workers, conservation specialists, media professionals, educators and many more.

Net Positive Impact on Biodiversity – a conservation mechanism for the private sector

As societal expectations and regulatory environments rapidly evolve regarding the private sectors’ land use management and obligation, appropriate and sustainable conservation mechanisms have never been more relevant. Recently, both the International Finance Corporation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development adopted policies that aim to move the private sector towards ensuring either no net loss or achieving a net positive impact on biodiversity for the projects that receive finance. A number of conservation mechanisms are emerging for debate.

What constitutes a resilient food system?

The rising demand for food, occurring against a backdrop of population growth and global environmental change is testing the resilience of food systems worldwide. Earth has to produce more food when the planet is close to tipping points that may transform it in ways that are undesirable from a human perspective.

Introduction to resilience assessment as a tool for transforming social-ecological systems

The Resilience Alliance has published a workbook designed to enable practitioners and policy makers assess the resilience of "social-ecological systems" (landscapes, farms, fisheries, forests, water catchments) and enable strategic decision-making based on the best available knowledge of the state and dynamics of the system being managed.

What is Asian system of Marine Protected Area?

The importance of marine conservation is becoming higher and higher recently in global scale. To halt and reverse the degradation of marine ecosystems, the decision was adopted by COP10 of the CBD(Conservation of Biological Diversity) ; at least 10% of all the world’s marine and coastal areas should be protected by 2020. Also WSSD (World Summit on Sustainable Development) stated the need to develop MPA networks by 2012.

Sustainable Travel and Eco-Tourism

In this two hour window, participants will brainstorm the best practices for creating the ideal eco-resort experience given the protected area´s natural surroundings.

Things to consider include:

Types of buildings - using indigenous/recycled materials, bringing in prefab.

Plumbing – the gold standard for sustainability.

Cuisine – locavore meets eco-tourism, exploring ways in which cooking with local ingredients can protect bio-diversity and improve food security.

Energy sources – wind, solar, others…

Establishing individual relationships with community and government leaders to develop sustainable resource management capacity

Our proposal to help achieve the IUCN Programme 2013-2016, based upon our unique experiences in South America and Southeast Asia, is to encourage NGOs working in developing countries to first focus upon developing individual relationships between NGO board members and rural community leaders and their responsible government officials who can then work together as partners in identifying local and national needs to manage and utilize local wildlife resources for subsistence and/or economic well-being, and then second, focus upon developing a program, based upon a thorough understanding of re

The Business and Ecosystems Think Tank – Part A

Whose responsibility is it to tackle our current economic and environmental crisis? Is it business? Is it governments? We believe it is a shared responsibility.
