Contribution to a Brazilian National Road Map to implement the outcome of CBD COP10

The main purpose of this activity in Brazil is to contribute to the development of a national biodiversity strategy to fulfill the demands, at a national level, of the CBD Strategic Plan for the Post-2010 Period, as approved in Nagoya at COP10.

Building on an existing partnership between IUCN and the Brazilian Environment Ministry, this project aims to bring together stakeholders from across government, business, indigenous people, civil society and academia to design a refreshed national biodiversity strategy and design a process of implementing and monitoring it.

Strengthening biodiversity in climate change mitigation and adaptation projects

Today, more and more initiatives, programmes and funds develop on national and international levels that support climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. As a result the number of projects related to REDD+ or the conservation of climate relevant ecosystems increases constantly. However, in some instances, for example, where afforestation leads to the establishment of monocultures or the introduction of exogenous trees, climate projects may have negative impacts on biodiversity.

Collaborating with Local and Sub-National Authorities to archieve the Aichi targets

Context :
- existing initiatives : partenership between IUCN France and sub-national governement about regional strategy for biodiversity and ecosystem services, LAB of ICLEI
- implementation of the Plan of Action on Sub-national Governments, Cities, and other Local Authorities for Biodiversity (Nagoya 2010)

Major issue :How can local and sub-national authorities rely on the expertise of IUCN (Secretariat, IUCN members, national and regional committees, experts) to archeive the Aichi targets ?

Choosing your conservation flagship: an evidence-based approach

Flagship species are instrumental in raising awareness and changing behaviour for biodiversity conservation. However, most flagships are selected without engaging the stakeholders they attempt to influence, which can acutely hamper their effectiveness. To tackle this issue, we developed a framework based on social marketing and environmental economics which aims at understanding the values key stakeholders hold for different species.

World Heritage Areas as learning landscapes - turning research results into management action

The World Heritage Centre has proposed that, "World Heritage properties can serve as laboratories where monitoring, mitigation and adaptation processes can be applied, tested and improved. They can partner with relevant organizations in field activities on mitigation and adaptation strategies, methodologies, tools and/or pilot projects". While this proposal was developed in the context of climate change, its logic extends to all aspects of the sustainable management of World Heritage Areas to achieve sustainable environmental, social and economic outcomes.

Upgrading Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through National Park Experiences

Since the United Nations General Assembly declared 2005-2014 the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), ESD aims at providing every individual with the opportunity to acquire the values, competencies, knowledge and skills that enable him or her to contribute to a humane, socially just, economically viable and ecologically sustainable future. ESD is must-to-do to acquire sustainable future for people.

Education for Sustainable China: the collective voice, wisdom and action in schools and communities

Shangri-la Institute for Sustainable Communities (SISC) works to promote social transformation towards sustainability through our Education for a Sustainable China (ESC) programme. ESC is a platform for developing and disseminating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) practices and theories through local and national projects in China.

The focus of our poster will be examples of our ESD projects implemented in both formal and non-formal sectors. This will include brief introductions to our work in water preservation, community empowerment and climate change education.
