Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Mining in South Africa

The potential of mining to impact biodiversity is well known, but little has been done in South Africa, one of the world´s major mining countries, to assist mining companies to reduce their impacts on biodiversity and contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. Instead they have been expected to show initiative or follow international examples of good practice, such as the International Council on Mining and Metal´s (ICMM) Good Practice Guidance (GPG) for Mining and Biodiversity, which was developed through ICMM´s dialogue with IUCN.

Marine algal flora at Marine National Park of KOREA

This study elucidated flora list of marine algae at Marine National Park of Korea. As a result, a total number of 190 algal species – 29 greens, 54 browns, 107 reds – was identified. The most species (141) were found at Hallyeohaesang National Park, while the fowest (80) were found at Dadohaehaesang National Park.

Towards Greater Equity and Sustainability: Building the Union´s Capacity and Knowledge for Natural resource Governance

By bringing together a broad spectrum of participants from IUCN Secretariat, members, commissions, government agencies, and indigenous and community organizations, we will ensure that diverse perspectives have a voice and are able to enrich IUCN’s knowledge on governance. The discussion and analysis of the challenges, opportunities and lessons on governance will be based on practical experiences of IUCN, members and others. Participants will explore governance principles, in order to develop a shared understanding of the elements of a common governance framework.

How zoos, aquaria, museums can (be used) contribute better developing the biodiversity-consciousness

We all live in a changing world were we need to join forces in order to stop the decline of biodiversity - which the humas population as well as animals and nature rely upon. Zoos, aquariums and museums attract many visitors every year (in Europe about 125 million visitors every year!) and they are a very good place to reach out with information and education.

How to get involved in the World Heritage Convention: A Users Guide for IUCN Members

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention is one of the most important global conservation instruments and has almost universal adoption amongst the nations of the world. It provides a unique framework for securing the conservation of over 200 of the world´s most important natural areas, such as the Serengeti, Galapagos and the Great Barrier Reef, recognized as being of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity as a whole.

Sub-Global Assessments: Tools and techniques for undertaking and using Ecosystem Assessments

With mounting socio-economic pressures and continued lack of appreciation of its true value to society, nature must stake its claim in the future of the planet. An ecosystem assessment is one such approach for this, where the findings of science concerning the causes of ecosystem change, their consequence for human well-being, and management and policy options are brought to bear on the needs of decision-makers.

Cultural Heritage Management Capacity and Enhanced Biocultural Resilience in High-Value Landscapes

This knowledge café will further strengthen links across the nature-culture divide in protected area management, to bolster biocultural resilience in World Heritage and other high-value landscapes. The proposal builds on the 2008 Barcelona workshop "Bridging the Nature-Culture Divide to Conserve the Diversity of Life". IUCN has a vital interest in integrating approaches to natural and cultural heritage. The initiatives of the IUCN World Heritage Programme and relevant WCPA specialist groups are beginning to get results.

Enhancing the resilience of antelopes to human threats: from plan to action

The Antelope Specialist Group (ASG) of the SSC/IUCN is very much concerned with the pressing need for action in preserving antelopes in general. Antelopes are subject to a number of surveys for assessing their conservation status. However, "counting antelopes does not save them". The ASG would like to take advantage of this knowledge cafe for addressing the specific issue of how to transform recommendations into action.

Campaña Playa Botella

El uso de envases y bolsas de plástico se ha convertido en una grave problemática ambiental en todo el planeta. Se generan miles de millones de botellas cada año y en su gran mayoría llegan a contaminar la tierra, ríos y mares.
