Energy, Resource Competition and Resilient Ecosystems

In the coming decades the world will face tough challenges: rising demand for energy, water, and food, tightening energy supplies, growing impact of climate change, and continued loss of biodiversity. Awareness is growing that these issues are interlinked and that single-issue solutions are not sustainable.
A lot of work has been done on understanding the linkages between two systems, but little is known on the nexus between the three of them.

Transforming Agriculture, Transforming Conservation: New partnerships for global environmental resilience and food sovereignty

Integrating conservation with agriculture and food security has now become central to sustainable development at all scales, from local community to global, and is at the heart of the challenges in greening the economy and sustaining ecosystems. If we are to enhance nature’s resilience and sustain biocultural diversity we must engage with agriculture. This workshop will gather leaders from conservation organizations, research institutions, global programs and farmer/food movements working at landscape-scale to establish common conceptual frameworks and imagine practical collaborations. It will feature exemplary case studies that illuminate successes while exploring the kinds of mechanisms and institutional partnerships needed. A facilitated discussion will explore local experience as well as the general lessons learned, particularly in regard to how IUCN members can partner with other crucial actors to integrate agriculture and ecology.

High Seas Protected Areas: learning from success

This Knowledge Cafe will identify winning approaches that can be replicated on the high seas (areas beyond national jurisdiction), leading to the identification, designation and effective management of a representative system of marine protected areas (MPAs).

Through exchange of information on existing and emerging offshore MPAs and scenario studies of potential paths ahead, particpants will identify key elements for success. Participants will also share new scientific, analytical and legal tools for building systems of MPAs as part of a wider integrated ecosystem-approach.

Promoting a Blue Society - an Ocean of opportunity

Facing the challenge of developing a new ambitious model for sustainable development, fostering well-being and equity for mankind in harmony with the World´s ocean, its fundamental element, we propose to develop the concept of "Blue Society," an ocean of opportunities for all. This new concept is based on the premise that there are two imperatives that society should integrate: satisfying the needs of our planet´s inhabitants today; and preserving the means of subsistence for the generations to come, especially the resources and services provided by the ocean.

15 years of influencing people and creating positive impact

During 15 years of work we succeeded to improve the quality of life of our local communities, in which we integrated the natural resources management in our programs, the poster will be telling our story and how we implement community based initiatives depending on sustainable use of natural resources and how this impacted positively on local communities. the poster will show a case studies where the communities managed to use their natural resources in proper way and they get benefits from using these natural resources effectively and in sustainable manner.

Basic Forest Carbon Inventory and Accounting: Techniques and Tools

Developing valid and verifiable estimates of forest carbon stocks is a critical activity that enables participation in international reporting programs, emerging carbon credit trading markets, programs such as UN-REDD and REDD+, and a variety of other forest-based mitigation activities at scales from the community to the nation. There are several methods that can be used to develop estimates of forest carbon sequestration, depending on the spatial scale needed and the quality and quantity of available data.

Product Development and Marketing Sustainable and Ecotourism - Practical tools and applicaton for SMEs.

Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape ETPS - CMAR: Moving towards a Sustainable Regional Initiative

The poster will show in two parts what has been at what should become the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape, where Protected Areas Agencies of Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Colombia work together to protect the ecological connectivity of five (5) marine protected areas. The first part is a retrospective look to the projects, actions and developments of the ETPS in the six years passed since its creation.
