An overlooked threat to biodiversity: The global commercial pet trade in amphibians and reptiles

The collection of amphibians and reptiles within the herpetoculture society has attracted global attention. While the US, EU have gone commercial since the late 1970s with Japan following soon after, more markets have emerged particularly in China. The pet trade with popular species has been proven to be detrimental for species due to over-collecting for commercial purposes.

A Systems Approach Towards Energy, Food and Environmental Security: the Biochar Story

The quality of life for present and future generations depends on the development and adoption of new research paradigms that integrate the physical, biological and social sciences. Such integrative research is required to provide the new insights and fundamental knowledge needed to address the wide range of issues associated with ecosystems and their relationship to human health and well-being.

Addressing Development Impacts at an Ecosystem Level: The Practical Application of the Mitigation Hierarchy

The mitigation protocol (avoid, minimize, offset/compensate) is being used at an increasing number of institutions and places around the world to reduce the environmental impacts of urban, infrastructure, industrial and agricultural development. Used correctly at an ecosystem scale, the mitigation protocol can be a highly effective method of integrating human needs and sustaining ecological processes across wide areas and can mobilize money to support conservation that would not otherwise be available.

Well trained Rangers are critical to healthy ecosystems and healthy communities

Park rangers, guards, guides, wardens – these are the people with feet-on-the-ground, who work with communities near protected areas and are those in the park area who monitor the daily health of the area, and whose everyday work is dedicated to conserving and increasing biodiversity in their protected area.

Restoration of Forests and Landscapes - How Countries Can Map and Value Their Restoration Opportunities

About 30 percent of potential global forest cover has been completely cleared and a further 20 percent has been degraded. But the spiral of increasing degradation and poverty can be broken.

A new global assessment used consistent data to map degraded forest lands and restoration opportunities at 1x1 km resolution. Historical and current forest extent was considered along with current land use and population density.

Young people's role in forest conservation

Young people are living a new stage in history in which they must decide to transform their lifestyle into a sustainable one, creating conditions that will enable them to have better opportunities.
Overall, young people do not have any decision power regarding the use of natural resources. However, they do have an entrepreneurial spirit that allows them to take part in the protection and conservation of forests. These actions have different levels of impact based on their knowledge, institutional support and other influential factors.
