Storytelling with Ocean in Google Earth. Case studies with National Geographic, Mission Blue & Wildscreen

Google, National Geographic, Sylvia Earle's Mission Blue Foundation, IUCN and Wildscreen have worked to make information about marine science and conservation available to the world in the Ocean in Google Earth and Maps. The goal of this workshop is share how organizations have used Google Earth and Maps for ocean conservation outreach. The Ocean layers in Google Earth contain important geo‐located data and exciting multimedia content ‐ critical to our global conservation efforts. This workshop will provide an overview of what is available in this virtual ocean.

A Spatial Analysis of Korean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

Protected area designation is essentially a spatial approach that attempts to regulate the human use of a space by preemptively labeling it as ´protected.´ Far from the title, however, a protected is not always "protected" in a rigorous sense. In effect, as reflected in the IUCN definition, a protected area includes diverse categories from those that are strictly preserved to those that are communally managed without a necessary legal protection.

Promoting a Blue Society - an Ocean of opportunity

Facing the challenge of developing a new ambitious model for sustainable development, fostering well-being and equity for mankind in harmony with the World´s ocean, its fundamental element, we propose to develop the concept of "Blue Society," an ocean of opportunities for all. This new concept is based on the premise that there are two imperatives that society should integrate: satisfying the needs of our planet´s inhabitants today; and preserving the means of subsistence for the generations to come, especially the resources and services provided by the ocean.

Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape ETPS - CMAR: Moving towards a Sustainable Regional Initiative

The poster will show in two parts what has been at what should become the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape, where Protected Areas Agencies of Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Colombia work together to protect the ecological connectivity of five (5) marine protected areas. The first part is a retrospective look to the projects, actions and developments of the ETPS in the six years passed since its creation.

Towards Synergy between Dugong Conservation and Community Development: Roles of NGOs and Local Communities

As the US and Japanese governments’ plan to build a US military base in Henoko/Oura Bay, Okinawa, Japan, critical habitat for the endangered Okinawa dugong, is now under critical review, efforts are being made not only towards the protection of the Okinawa dugongs per se, but also towards synergy between dugong/environmental conservation and community development.

What Works and What does not Work: Examination of Dugong Conservation Measures and Strategies

Various measures and strategies for dugong conservation have been developed and proposed at national and international levels; their implementation always takes place in the context of the "local." Successful implementation of dugong conservation measures and strategies thus implies adaption and modification of such measures and strategies in accordance with the needs of the local context. In fact, it is flexibility and capacity to adapt to change or necessary situations that are vital to dugong conservation.

Management planning of protected areas incorporating local people´s livelihoods. For PA managers and stakeholders.

This proposal seeks to train key people in the development and implementation of protected areas management plans that incorporate local people´s livelihoods from the very beginning and with the goal to eliminate conflicts and contradictions with the management and the objectives of the protected areas. These conflicts and contradictions between management and livelihoods (considering management categories governance types, among others) have incremented overtime because they have been traditionally postponed.

Conservation of the Okinawa Dugong: After Two IUCN Recommendations and One IUCN Resolution

In the last 12 years, the IUCN has passed two recommendations (2.72 and 3.114) and one resolution (4.022) to promote the conservation of the Okinawa dugong in light of the US and Japanese governments´ plan to construct a US military base in Henoko/Oura Bay, Okinawa, a critical habitat for the Okinawa dugong. While the construction plan still remains in effect, the recommendations/resolution have proved to be important tools in the sustained conservation efforts for the Okinawa dugong and their habitats.
