World National Parks CEOs Forum

During recent years, many arguments have been advanced about the importance of protected areas and their role in shaping a sustainable future. At the same time, there is evidence that increasingly urbanized populations visit protected areas less, and there is a continuous flow of decisions that affect protected areas negatively including through mineral exploitation, infrastructure development or poorly resourced management.

Long-term Monitoring on Marine Ecosystem before/ after Hebei Spirit Oil Spill

Three national parks were seriously contaminated by the Hebei Spirit oil spill in Dec 7, 2007. A total amount of 12,547 kl of crude oil from the crude carrier was spread over the Yellow Sea of the Korea Peninsular. Tar balls were found in northern Jeju Island, which is located about 842 km from the incident site, after 33 days.

Myth of invincibility shattered: evaluation of current trends in the conservation status of marine species

Marine species have long been considered resilient to extinction because they have widespread distributional ranges and are abundant. We know now that this myth of ocean invincibility has been shattered, with marine species extinctions recorded since the beginning of the Holocene. The rates of exploitation and habitat destruction are only expected to increase and intensify as food sources become more depleted. Hundreds of marine species are threatened with extinction, and it is clear that marine biodiversity is experiencing potentially irreversible degradation.
