Antarctica and the Southern Ocean – celebrating a unique place on Earth and discussing activities helping to conserve it

During this session pictures and videos from the Last Ocean documentary from Peter Young about the Ross Sea will be shown.
Other activities from partner organizations will be briefly introduced (quick-fire rounds), e.g. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as proposed by the Antarctic Ocean Alliance.
The audience will then have the opportunity to discuss the presented activities and information in an informal setting.

Voices of the North

Videos about the Wildlife, Habitat, Community, Art and Culture of Canada's North, from the point of view of people who live in the North. Interactive presentations will be provided. "Education through adventure" marine expedition video clips will also be included that feature the Sail for Wildlife Migration of the Humpback Whale presented by CWF Learning Institute Fellow Dr. Yves Jean, the Trans-Atlantic Quebec City-St. Malo Sailing Race and the Canadian Wildlife Federation Salish Sea Expedition led by CWF Youth Spokesperson Olympic gold medal rower Adam Kreek. Join us for refreshments and luncheon snacks.

Conserving Arctic and Antarctic Marine Biodiversity

This workshop will bring together experts from IUCN, Members and stakeholders from a number of countries active in marine conservation and management in the Arctic and the Antarctic. It will explore the biodiversity and biophysical values of the Arctic and Southern Oceans and develop ways to progress MPAs and integrated, ecosystem-based management (EBM) in both. These solutions have the potential to provide groundbreaking models for other ocean areas facing the twin threats of climate change and accelerating industrial activity.

Inuit Sustainable Use and Management of Arctic Species and the Role of Traditional Knowledge

The sustainable use of wildlife is one of the pillars of the IUCN´s work, and the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (Canada´s national Inuit organization), along with the Inuit Circumpolar Council-Canada (ICC) and other international network partners, engage within the IUCN to promote and advance the conservation and sustainable use priorities of Inuit in the Arctic, and within a broader Indigenous context.

Conserving biodiversity across 1/9 OF THE EARTH

WWF-Russia together with more than 300 specialists carried out a gap-analysis of the existing federal PAs system of the Russian Federation. This analysis is the first of its kind for Russia, in which a unified scientific and methodological approach was used, taking into account all available sources of information on biological diversity and protected areas of Russia. Special attention is paid to the role of the network of federal protected areas in longterm conservation of rare and valuable species.
