A novel fire restoration tool – in Mount Attavyros Natura 2000 site, island of Rhodes

The poster will present the LIFE08 NAT/GR/000533 project, entitled "Fire RestorAtion Methodology for MEditerranean Forests – environmental safety & sustainability of 4 interventions in the Rhodes NATURA 2000 site FRAMME", which was developed, with the ambition of covering the knowledge gap in contemporary science regarding management and restoration of fire afflicted Mediterranean forests.

Efficient management and preservation of fisheries resources in freshwater ecosystem(South Korea)

The study sought to determine the efficient management of fisheries resources (Coreoperca herzi) by estimating the potential yield (PY), which means the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) based on the optimal stock, in the mid-upper region of the Seomjin River watershed from August 2008 to April 2009. To estimate the population ecological characteristic, the age determined by counting the otolith annuli. The stock assessment was conducted by the swept area method and PY was estimated by a modified fisheries management system based on the allowable biological catch (ABC).

Gestion communautaire des ressources naturelles au Bénin: cas de la vallée du sitatunga

CREDI-ONG est une organisation non gouvernementale s´investissant principalement dans la promotion de l´aquaculture et la protection de l´environnement. Building Resilience through the Conservation and Use of Agricultural Biodiversity: The UNEP-GEF Contribution

Current agricultural practices are regarded as one of the most significant drivers of biodiversity loss. At the same time, the goal of achieving global food security remains a long way off. The world desperately needs an agricultural production system that is both resilient and contributes to achieving food security. Agricultural biodiversity will play a central role in achieving these twin objectives. By conserving and harnessing agricultural biodiversity, food and agriculture production can contribute to sustaining healthy biodiverse ecosystems.

Implementation of the Action Plan for the Conservation of West African Manatees in Guinea-Bissau

The poster will show first project results concerning the actions of CBD-Habitat supported by OceanCare to improve the implementation of the Action Plan for the Western African Manatee on the field in Guinea-Bissau. The support of the Manatee action plan was developed mainly by performing a valorisation of its status in Orango National Park (Guinea-Bissau) as well as by the identification of the impact that fisheries causes to the population, and the identification of critical habitats of the species in order that their protection can be improved by national authorities.

Leveraging Markets for Conservation: Removing the Roadblocks to Scaling up.

Private sector has long been blamed as the foe of conservation, and not without reasons. The unprecedented occurrence of floods, drought, poverty and conflicts are the outcomes of our collective neglect of nature. Businesses have increasingly sought green credentials, some as public relations and others for legitimate concerns as to the sustainability of the landscape and communities they so heavily depend on for their supplies.

Making vulnerability assessments matter for climate change adaptation in the Pacific Islands

As global climate change continues to impact Pacific Islands, the clear need for local and regional adaptation has made vulnerability assessments (VAs) an increasingly useful planning tool for biocultural resource adaptation.

Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation in Asia

IUCN Asia RPAP and WCPA Asia would like to make an opportunity to share the experiences and knowledge to strengthen the protected area management and pan-Asia PA networks. In order to accomplish it, below issues will be highlighted at this workshop;
① Asian Protected Area Philosophy, which has emphasized "living in harmony with nature"
② Review on the management status of Asia´s protected areas(Management Effectiveness Evaluation in Asia)
③ IUCN WCPA Asia Strategy 2011-2014
④ Report on Preliminary Asia Park Congress (2011. Nov)

International cooperation for waterbird monitoring to support sound management

Recently, migratory birds populations have fluctuated in a great scale due to habitat loss and degradation, and climate change. To set up proper conservation strategy and to cope with the dramatic decrease of threatened and endangered species, exact information and analysis of current migratory birds population in a yearly basis is crucially important. The workshop aims to promote public participation to monitor the distribution and populations of waterbirds and status of wetlands.
