Contribution to a Brazilian National Road Map to implement the outcome of CBD COP10

The main purpose of this activity in Brazil is to contribute to the development of a national biodiversity strategy to fulfill the demands, at a national level, of the CBD Strategic Plan for the Post-2010 Period, as approved in Nagoya at COP10.

Building on an existing partnership between IUCN and the Brazilian Environment Ministry, this project aims to bring together stakeholders from across government, business, indigenous people, civil society and academia to design a refreshed national biodiversity strategy and design a process of implementing and monitoring it.

Strengthening biodiversity in climate change mitigation and adaptation projects

Today, more and more initiatives, programmes and funds develop on national and international levels that support climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. As a result the number of projects related to REDD+ or the conservation of climate relevant ecosystems increases constantly. However, in some instances, for example, where afforestation leads to the establishment of monocultures or the introduction of exogenous trees, climate projects may have negative impacts on biodiversity.

Our Protected Planet: Achieving Aichi biodiversity targets through constituency building, science and action (WCPA official session)

Protected areas are well known as the cornerstones in biodiversity conservation efforts. The Aichi Biodiversity Targets, particularly Target 11, challenge the world to significantly strengthen protected area implementation for the conservation of biodiversity. Protected areas need to be "effectively and equitably managed, ecologically representative and well connected systems" and located in "areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services".

Collaborating with Local and Sub-National Authorities to archieve the Aichi targets

Context :
- existing initiatives : partenership between IUCN France and sub-national governement about regional strategy for biodiversity and ecosystem services, LAB of ICLEI
- implementation of the Plan of Action on Sub-national Governments, Cities, and other Local Authorities for Biodiversity (Nagoya 2010)

Major issue :How can local and sub-national authorities rely on the expertise of IUCN (Secretariat, IUCN members, national and regional committees, experts) to archeive the Aichi targets ?

Upgrading Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through National Park Experiences

Since the United Nations General Assembly declared 2005-2014 the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), ESD aims at providing every individual with the opportunity to acquire the values, competencies, knowledge and skills that enable him or her to contribute to a humane, socially just, economically viable and ecologically sustainable future. ESD is must-to-do to acquire sustainable future for people.

Business skills for ecotourism operations

The event is structured in two parts:
- Morning session: 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, with a stronger focus on presentations;
- Afternoon session: 2.00 to 6.00 pm, focusing more on activities (the afternoon session is OPTIONAL).

Community based chimpanzee conservation in Guinea Bissau

CHIMBO Foundation’s goal is chimpanzee conservation in West-Africa.
CHIMBO runs a community based conservation program in the south-eastern part of Guinea Bissau: the Boé sector. This is an area with a rich biodiversity with the chimpanzee as its flagship species.
Population growth (100% in 15 years) and the resulting need for more food threatens the rich flora and fauna.

Large Carnivores Initiative in West and Central Africa

There is a large mammal crisis in West and Central Africa, which has largely gone unnoticed to the international conservation community (Craigie et al, 2010). Large carnivores are keystone species. This workshop intends to share knowledge and mobilise IUCN members to take action for ecosystem restoration, with a focus on the dry savannah zone, using carnivores as ecosystem embassadors. Special focus will be on stakeholder involvement including policy makers, local governments, private sector, women and indigenous communities.

How zoos, aquaria, museums can (be used) contribute better developing the biodiversity-consciousness

We all live in a changing world were we need to join forces in order to stop the decline of biodiversity - which the humas population as well as animals and nature rely upon. Zoos, aquariums and museums attract many visitors every year (in Europe about 125 million visitors every year!) and they are a very good place to reach out with information and education.

Sub-Global Assessments: Tools and techniques for undertaking and using Ecosystem Assessments

With mounting socio-economic pressures and continued lack of appreciation of its true value to society, nature must stake its claim in the future of the planet. An ecosystem assessment is one such approach for this, where the findings of science concerning the causes of ecosystem change, their consequence for human well-being, and management and policy options are brought to bear on the needs of decision-makers.
