What the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) could do for building capacities?

Since 2008 there have been repeated calls from developing countries for a commitment of resources to ensure that the emerging Intergovernmental Science‐Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a strong focus on capacity building.
Now established, IPBES resolves to prioritize key capacity‐building needs, provide and call for financial and other support for the highest‐priority needs related directly to the Platform’s activities and establish a forum to catalyse financing for such capacity building activities.

This lunchtime pavilion event will look at putting nature in the Water-Energy-and Food Security Nexus by using Environmental Flows as a tool to ensure the needs of people and nature are met in a growing and increasingly urbanized world. Environmental flows provide the opportunity to put ecosystems at the centre of water allocation planning through recognising the role freshwater ecosystem play in providing water to people, nature, and key sectors of the economy such as agriculture and energy.

At the moment, much investment in land use is measured in terms of narrow single benefit outcomes, be they food or fiber or carbon or something else. The landscape approach is a key element for moving toward greater forest and landscape functionality and productivity that will benefit rural areas in an immediate economic sense and also in ensuring a future generation of the goods and services people will need to ensure their social and economic survival.

Who decides how resources are used? In the face of a growing population and rapid economic development, deciding how to address competing demands over natural resources for food, energy, water and other life sustaining values is becoming increasingly complex, especially in trans-boundary contexts.

CEC and CEM Awards

This event will include the presentation of two new Commission awards followed by a reception.
Presentation of a CEC Award for best material in Spanish on environmental education about climate change adaptation. This contest was created in order to recognize and encourage environmental education specialists, from the formal and informal sector, who have created educational materials in Spanish, addressing the food production sector, as well as policy decision makers in the field of agriculture and fisheries for climate change adaptation.

Tackling the ecosystem challenge – business reflections on the Forum

Business is part of the solution to addressing ecosystem related challenges, so this Forum is an excellent opportunity for business to showcase and discuss what is currently being applied on the ground. This Happy Hour will end 5 days of events, all aiming at featuring, demonstrating and discussing the issue and possible approaches to address it.
