Law and Governance

Governance of Protected Areas

Since the beginning of the millennium, the IUCN and CBD have taken the lead on discussing governance for protected areas (PAs). Governance is about authority, responsibility and accountability, both according to legal rules and to the norms and customs lived by societies. As a social phenomenon, governance is regulated by laws but also by history, culture, values. For PA systems and individual PA sites, governance is about “who makes decisions, how those decisions are influenced and developed, and how are they implemented, respected, enforced, monitored and improved through time”.

Conservation Finance: gaps, comparative analysis and alternatives in a dynamic debate

The resilience of conservation initiatives, including protected areas, depends in great measure on their financial sustainability. Addressing funding requirements through an appropriate mix of public funding, revenues and innovative financial arrangements that support conservation efforts, including best practices of governance, accountability and financial management, is a key aspect to achieve conservation outcomes.

Several efforts over the past few years are brought together in this workshop. Analyses of the costs and sources of funding at regional level, lessons learned regarding the utility of conservation trust funds and project financing, experiences with sustainable financing at system and site scale, and the prospects of innovative financing mechanisms will be presented. Most importantly, the workshop will take stock of the prospects for achieving success in the future.

Connectivity Conservation, Law and Beyond: for an environmentally and socially resilient planet

Workshop Objectives
To promote the role that collaborative connectivity conservation plays in enhancing biodiversity conservation and by providing nature-based solutions to climate change and in increasing the health and resilience of communities by:
1) Inspiring environmental and social connectivity conservation through the demonstration of global exemplars, including new IUCN and partner connectivity conservation initiatives.

15 years of influencing people and creating positive impact

During 15 years of work we succeeded to improve the quality of life of our local communities, in which we integrated the natural resources management in our programs, the poster will be telling our story and how we implement community based initiatives depending on sustainable use of natural resources and how this impacted positively on local communities. the poster will show a case studies where the communities managed to use their natural resources in proper way and they get benefits from using these natural resources effectively and in sustainable manner.

An overlooked threat to biodiversity: The global commercial pet trade in amphibians and reptiles

The collection of amphibians and reptiles within the herpetoculture society has attracted global attention. While the US, EU have gone commercial since the late 1970s with Japan following soon after, more markets have emerged particularly in China. The pet trade with popular species has been proven to be detrimental for species due to over-collecting for commercial purposes.

Giving Force to Conservation Laws: Environmental Adjudication

Effective judicial environmental enforcement is needed worldwide to safeguard biodiversity, curb greenhouse gas emissions, abate pollution, secure rights to clean water, and foster sustainable development for Earth´s growing population. National environmental laws often fall short in implementation, compliance, and enforcement. Access to justice, critically important to the rule of law and sustainable development, is lacking in many nations, and justice, particularly with regards to environmental issues, is not yet accessible.

Conservation of the Okinawa Dugong: After Two IUCN Recommendations and One IUCN Resolution

In the last 12 years, the IUCN has passed two recommendations (2.72 and 3.114) and one resolution (4.022) to promote the conservation of the Okinawa dugong in light of the US and Japanese governments´ plan to construct a US military base in Henoko/Oura Bay, Okinawa, a critical habitat for the Okinawa dugong. While the construction plan still remains in effect, the recommendations/resolution have proved to be important tools in the sustained conservation efforts for the Okinawa dugong and their habitats.
